How to Get to Summer Palace: By Car, Metro, Bus 2024
Summer Palace used to be the royal park where the emperors of China dwelt during Summer. It has been opening to the public as an exquisite park that owns almost the best designed architecture, classic featured buildings and traditional gardening pavilions of ancient China. As a famous scenic site, summer palace is surrounded by multiple bus stops and a metro station. You can easily get there and transfer to other attractions such as Yuanmingyuan Garden, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven.
Summer Palace Location - Where is Summer Palace
Summer Palace is located in No. 19 Xin Jian Gong Men Rd, Haidian District, Beijing (海淀区新建宫门路19号) in the northwest of the city center Forbidden City. It is about 19km (1h10mins by car) away from Forbidden City, 21km (1h10mins by car) away from Temple of Heaven, 38km (1h by car) away from Beijing Capital International Airport, and 25km (1h15mins by car) away from Beijing South Railway Station (北京南站).

Subway to Summer Palace
Besides multiple buses, you can also take the metro line 4 or the metro line 16 to the Summer Palace. There are two stations near the North Palace Gate and East Palace Gate.
To the North Palace Gate: Get off at Exit D of North Palace Gate Station (Pinyin: BeigongmenZhan 北宫门站), and go straight along Yiheyuan Rd (颐和园路) and Qinglongqiao E Rd (青龙桥东街) for about 300m , then reach the North Palace Gate Ticket office within 5min.
To the West Palace Gate: Get off at Southwest Exit C2 of Xiyuan Station (Pinyin: Xiyuanzhan 西苑站), and go straight along the Tongqing Street (同庆街), and then reach West Palace Gate within 15 minutes.
Bus to Summer Palace
There are six entrances to summer palace, namely West Palace Gate (Pinyin: Xi Gongmen 西宫门), North Palace Gate (Pinyin: Bei Gongmen 北宫门), North Ruyi Gate (Pinyin: Beiruyimen 北如意门), East Palace Gate (Pinyin: Dong Gongmen 东宫门), South Ruyi Gate (Pinyin: Nanruyimen 南如意门), and New Palace Gate (Pinyin: Xinjian Gongmen 新建宫门). Tourists heading to Summer palace can stop at different gates to visit Summer palace. The most recommended travelling route is to enter Summer Palace from the North Gate.

Get off at Summer Palace West Gate Stop (Pinyin:Yiheyuan Ximenzhan 颐和园西门站)
Bus to North Palace Gate: Bus 303, Bus 332, Bus 346, Bus 384, Bus 394, Bus 563, Bus 584, Bus 601, Night Bus 8
Get off at Summer Palace North Gate Stop (Pinyin: Yiheyuan Beigongmenzhan 颐和园北宫门站)
Bus to East Palace Gate: Bus 332, Bus 346, Bus 584
Get off at Summer Palace Stop (Pinyin: Yiheyuan Zhan 颐和园站)
Bus to New Palace Gate: Bus 74, Bus 374, Bus 437
Get off at Summer Palace New Gate Stop (Pinyin: Yiheyuan Xinjiangongmenzhan 颐和园新建宫门站)
Bus to South Ruyi Gate: Bus 74, Bus 374, Bus 437
Get off at Liulangzhuang Stop (Pinyin: Liulangzhuangzhan 六郎庄站)
Bus to North Ruyi Gate: No Bus

From Beijing Airports to Summer Palace
Situated in the East of Beijing suburban area, Beijing Capital International Airport (北京首都国际机场) is 39km away from Summer Palace (1h by car). Beijing Daxing International Airport (北京大兴国际机场) is 70km away from it (1h20mins by car). You can grab a taxi to the scenic area. However, it may cost a lot. There is no direct bus/metro to the summer palace.
From Beijing Capital Airport to Summer Palace
The most recommended transferring way by public transportation is to take an airport express at Terminal 3 and get off at Sanyuanqiao Stop (三元桥站), then you may walk around 200 meters to Sanyuanqiao Metro Station and take metro line 10 to HaidianHuangzhuang Station (海淀黄庄站) where you can transfer to metro line 4 and reach North Palace Gate Station or Xiyuan Station. Later, you need to walk 1km.
From Beijing Daxing Airport to Summer Palace
You're suggested to take Daxing airport express at Daxing Airport Station and get off at Caoqiao Stop (草桥站). Then walk 450m to transfer to metro inner line 10 at Caoqiao Metro Station (草桥站) and get off at Bagou Metro Station (巴沟站) to transfer to Xijiao metro line (西郊线) (head for Xiangshan 香山) and get off at West Palace Gate Station. After that, you'll need to walk 370m.
From Forbidden City to Summer Palace
The Forbidden city is right in the city center and it is 20km (57min by car) to the southeast of the summer palace. The unexpected traffic jam may happen if you want to get to the Summer Palace during the peak hours or on weekend and holidays.
You can take Metro Line 1 at Tiananmen Square East Station (天安门东站) and transfer at Xidan Station (西单站) to take Metro Line 4 and stop at North Palace Gate Station or Xiyuan Station.
From Wangfujing to Summer Palace
Wangfujing is the most popular shopping paradise in Beijing and a top accommodation area for travellers in Beijing. Many visitors will transfer from here to Summer Palace. Not far from Tiananmen Square and Forbidden city and around 20km away from the summer palace in the southwest Beijing, you can also take metro line 1 from the nearest station such as Wangfujing Station (王府井站) and Tiananmen Square Station (天安门东站) to North Palace Gate Station or Xiyuan Station on Line 4, via Xidan Station (西单站).
